カナの婚礼の奇跡：主イエズス・キリストの寛大さと主の聖母に対する敬意

聖父と、聖子と聖霊との御名によりて、アーメン。

今日の福音には、私たちの主のパーソナリティーが表われています。
そして、「私たちの主が、どれほど寛大であったか、また、マリア様に対する敬意を払っていたか」ということが、よくわかります。

今日のカナでの婚礼の式では、私たちの主とマリア様が出席されます。
もちろん、この二人の中で、イエズス様こそが、重大な最も大切なお客様であるべきです。しかし、イエズス様は、その時、御自分の御神性を隠しておられました。そして、そのようなことが、天主の摂理によって許されました。

ですから、イエズス様は、この福音によると、最も大切なお客様ではなくて、マリア様に、大切な客としての名誉を与えておられました。
マリア様のお供として、イエズス様はこの婚礼に参加されます。
ここに、「主の御謙遜」が表われています。

イエズス・キリストは、天主の聖寵の創り主です。
イエズス様は、この結婚したカップルを祝福します。この結合を祝福します。
それは、イエズス様が天主としてそこに現存されるだけで、その二人を祝福されました。公認というのは、天主の愛のシンボルです。天主と私たちの結合のシンボルです。また、霊魂のみならず、全教会に対する愛の態度のシンボルです。

キリストは、このように、人間を天主の聖寵の高みまで上げるために、天主へと上げるために来られました。人間を、天主と結合させるために来られました。
そのために、イエズス・キリストは、御自分を教会のために、御自分を生贄として捧げられます。

ところで、婚姻とはまさにこれです。
新郎は、愛する花嫁のために自分を生贄として捧げます。花嫁のために、自分のすべてを捧げ尽くそうとします。
そして花嫁も、新郎のその犠牲、愛の犠牲に応えようと、愛で応えます。
いつも朗らかに、そして従順に夫に仕えようとします。
それと同じように、イエズス・キリストも教会のために命を捧げ、そして教会は、それに愛を持って応えようとします。
この天主の現実を、婚姻したカトリックの夫婦は生きようとします。
成聖の状態を保ちつつ、夫婦の友情を保ち、夫婦の相互の愛を保ち、互いに仕え合い、そして、キリストの教会とのイメージに倣うようにします。

この婚姻の席に、マリア様が現存されます。マリア様もいらっしゃいます。
ところで、どうしても婚姻の席になければならないものが欠けているということがわかりました。ワインが足りません。もう、ワインが尽きてしまいました。

それを、マリア様はイエズス様に、天主であるイエズス様に指摘します。
ところで、イエズス様は天主ですから、そんなことはもちろん御存知です。
永遠の昔から、よく知っておられました。
しかし、イエズス様は、マリア様が、そのことを御自分に伝えることをお望みでした。そして、マリア様は、イエズス様のお望みのように、その事実をイエズス様に伝えます。

イエズス様の御答えは、非常に驚くべきものでした。
「それが、私にいったいなんの関わりがあるのか。私の時は、まだ来ていない。」

この「私の時」というのは、おそらく、御自分の御神性を皆に示す時、あるいは、公生活の始まる時がまだ来ていない、という意味だったのでしょう。
イエズス様の御生活は、それまで隠されており、仕事と祈りに捧げられていました。常に御父を観想し、黙想し、そして、御父から与えられた、人類の救霊の使命について、考えを巡らせておられたことでしょう。

この御答えを見ると、イエズス様は、全然そんなことに関わりたくない、あるいは関係ないよ、とおっしゃっているかのようでした。
しかし、すべては天主の御摂理によって塩梅されていて、これが起こったことでした。
主は既に、マリア様が、この貧しいカップルを助けるように、そのために「取り次ぎを為すように」ということをお望みになって、敢えてこのような状況を作り出していた、そしてこれが、このようなことが、起こることを許されたのでした。
既に事が起こる前に、天主は、永遠の昔からすべてを配合されて、塩梅されていたので、御摂理によって統治されていたのでした。これが天主のやり方です。

旧約では、アカイヤという王様が、同じようなことがあったことがわかります。
たとえば、アカイヤは、今、死なんとばかりしていました。
この王はとても良い王だったので、自分の責任として与えられた王国がちゃんとするように、そのための時間が欲しいと主に祈り、そして、命を長らえさせてくださいと願いました。

祈りは聞き入れられ、更に長い命を与えられ、そして、良い死を迎えることができるようになりました。王国のために力を尽くすことができるようになりました。
もちろん、主は、このようなことを知っていたのですけれども、このような状況が起こるように、敢えて許されたのでした。死が近付いているかのようにされたのでした。

さて、婚礼の席ですけれども、主の時間は、主の時は、まだ来ていませんでした。しかし、マリア様が、この貧しいカップルのためにお祈りをします。
イエズス様のお考えでは、御望みでは、永遠の昔から、「マリア様が、このカップルのために、この時に、イエズス様にお願いすること」を計画されていました、望んでおられました。

私たちの主は、何もなさらないかのように思います、その返事だけを見ると。
しかし、マリア様は、まったくの信頼を込めていました。疑うことはありませんでした。そこで、「主のおっしゃる通りにしなさい」と、下僕（しもべ）たちに命じます。

ところで、この状況を見てみると、主は、いつも御自分の周りにいる人々をお使いになります。道具として使われます。
主にとって必要なものは、ただ「従順」な、そして「寛大」な霊魂だけです。
御自分の聖寵を与えるために、永遠の結果をもたらすために、主は、霊魂たちに接することができる、隣人たちに、イエズス様と同じように従順で、そして寛大な霊魂たちを使って、永遠の救いをもたらそうとします。

ところで、この召使いたち、下僕たちは、ワインがなくなってしまった、尽きてしまったという状況に対して、何もすることができませんでした。
いわば、「絶望」していました。
ですから、マリア様のおっしゃることに対して、イエズス様のおっしゃることに対して、いかなる疑問も挟みませんでした。そして、その通りに行ないます。

でも、よく考えてみると、いったい、石がめに水を汲むということが、ワインがなくなったということに、どのような関係があったのでしょうか？
しかも、この石がめというのは、ユダヤの清めの式の清めのために使われるもので、容器を洗ったり、皿洗いをしたり、そのためのものだったのです。
ですから、結婚のパーティーにワインがなくなった、「では今、台所の洗面器に水を入れてください」
——でも、下僕たちは、何も疑わずに従順に従います。

そして、イエズス様は、この汲んだ水を、宴会係に持っていくようにおっしゃいました。それがすべてでした。
マリア様は、「主のおっしゃる通りにしなさい」と言われ、そして、主は命令をして、下僕たちは、それを果たしました、それだけでした。

このワインがなくなったから、皆さん、今から奇跡を起こしますよ、皆さんの辱しめを取り除きますよ、などというお知らせはありませんでした。
ただ非常に隠れて、秘かにその奇跡を行なわれただけでした。
なんという御謙遜でしょうか——！

主が、水を汲んで宴会係に持っていくようにおっしゃった時、主は、「秩序、権威を尊重」しました。すべてに秩序があって、誰が何をする責任を持っているかがあります。それを尊重されました。

この宴会係の責任は、ワインの味を見て、ワインが良いものであるかということを確かめることでした。
受けたこの水を飲んでみて、ワインに変わった水を飲んで、そして、これは最初のものよりも良いものであるということに気が付きます。

これを見ると、この宴会係は、ワインがなくなったということには、気が付いていなかったようです。ですから、おそらくカップルも気が付いていなかったことでしょう。気が付いていたのは、ただ、マリア様とウェイターだけでした。

マリア様は、私たちが必要なものをすべて御存知です。
私たちが知る前から、私たちに必要な特別のお恵みを御存知です。
これを考えると、マリア様こそ、「私たちの本当のお母様である」と言うことができます。私たちのことを、私たちが必要なものを、いつも母として見ておられるからです。
「私たちが聖なる者となる」ことに対して、私たちをいつも助けようと準備されておられます。

主はとても寛大な方で、御恵みを、たくさんの御恵みを与えようとされます。しかし、それはいつも「マリア様を通して」なさいます。
ですから、私たちに必要なことは、主の与えてくださる御恵みにふさわしく「寛大で、従順である」ということです。私たちが、日々日々、ますます主に似通った者になるということです。

The beginning of miracles that Christ did do

In the Gospel today, we can see very clearly concerning the Person of Our Lord Jesus Christ, His sense of generosity and His great deference to Our lady.

We look at the circumstances of this first miracle. Our Lord according to spiritual authors is accompanying Our Lady to this Wedding and the accompanying feast. Our Lord is the one who is and has hid His divinity and so he is not a prominent guest. Of course, Our Lord through Divine providence has allowed for the circumstances to be as they are. He gives this honor to Our Lady and is seen as just accompanying her. Such is the great humility of Our Lord, very discreet.

Our Lord the author of grace will bless this couple in Cana and their union by His Divine presence. In doing so He will set Matrimony as a great symbol of God’s love and His attitude toward individual souls and even His entire Church. This is what Christ came to do, to unite God and man by elevating man by His grace. The married state represents this union. As a groom sacrifices everything for His wife and children and so Christ sacrifices and offers everything for His Church, His bridegroom and for individual souls. The groom pours out his life and sacrifices all for the bride. And so in a marriage contract, what is expected of the bride is to correspond with the love of the groom and obey and follow him with great faith and a generous heart. This is a divine reality which is symbolized by every Catholic couple who strive to live the Catholic life, in the state of grace. This ideal state of friendship, love, devotion and generosity is an image of what God does for us on a spiritual.

Going back to the circumstances of the Wedding at Cana, Our Lady is present and sees that a necessary part of the wedding feast has run out, that of Wine. She will point out this to Our Lord. Of course, He knows it already, He has known it from eternity. But He wants Our Lady to point it out to Him. Such a position that He has given to Our Lady. She can point this out to her Divine Son, God Himself, the author of all good.

Our Lord’s response is astounding. What is that to me? My time has not yet come. Our Lord speaks of His public life or revelation of His Divinity to all those around Him. It is for the first 30 years of His life, that he will live a life of prayer and work. He will contemplate his Father, and the mission of saving souls entrusted to his care.

It seems on many occasions that Divine Providence may have ruled already on certain issues or occasions. In the Old Testament this is particularly true for King Hezekiah who was told that his life would end shortly. He besought God to grant him more time and so God spared Him for another 10 years and so he was able to prepare well for death. God always knew what would happen but allowed for circumstances that provoked His will in the way that He desired.

So, it is with the wedding feast, He knew what would happen and mentions that it is not His hour but desires Our Lady to beseech Him on behalf of this poor couple who ran our wine. Incredible. Christ has wished this from all eternity. And Our Lady is the one who beseeches our Lord.

Looking at Our Lord’s reaction then one would think that perhaps nothing will be accomplished. Our Lady has no doubt, she is so confident in God’s providence that she instructs those who are about to do whatever Our Lord instructs Him to do.

If we surmise the situation then we can see that Our Lord will use those around Him and those around the bride and groom to prepare for this miracle. He only needs docile souls who likewise are generous as well. Imagine giving or helping for a cause and not knowing the great or eternal consequences that it may have for other souls. Often it is the case with souls who are in contact with Our Lord and in contact with someone who needs Our Lords grace, and these docile generous souls are used as instruments of God’s grace.

These waiters or souls must have been desperate to help the situation as they did not question the command of Our Lady or Lord. They simply acted without question of how this filling of water jars is used for washing supposed to make more wine. They simply did and had faith. Incredible, docile instruments.

Then what does Our Lord do. Commands that they draw forth from the containers. There is nothing further stated by Our Lord. It is accomplished, that which Our Lady pointed out. Nothing further. He does not make a public announcement to the people and much less, to the bride and groom. It just is. So, humble Our Lord is.

He tells the waiters to take to the steward. Our Lord respects the authority of the steward and the order of the household. He asks this to be taken to the person who sees to these things in the household, the steward. And the steward who is accustomed to tasting wine for the household said it was better than the first. We know that the steward did not know that it came from Our Lord. Moreover, we have the impression that even the chief steward was not aware of the situation of the wine, let alone the couple. Our Lady notices though.

From this we see how Our Lady is our true mother and takes care of all details of our spiritual life before even we might know that we are in need of grace. Such is the great solicitude of Our Lady. Always there and looking and expecting to be of assistance to us. So like Our Lord, we must always have a great deference to Our Lady. Our Lord, so generous wishes nothing more than to give that is to bestow His grace upon us through Our Lady. The only thing that we must do is to correspond with these graces to change into Him more and more each day..
